Abstract: Porous titanium and its alloys, particularly Ti-6Al-4V and shape memory alloy TiNi, are attractive materials offering various benefits. Having a porous structure, these materials present a high surface area and, particularly for medical applications (when used as an implant), a reduced stiffness mismatch. Although these materials have important properties, their processing is cited as a critical factor preventing their exploitation. This fact has driven research in the quest to find alternative means for its production. In this trend the FFC-Cambridge Process presents a possible cost effective route. So far this process has proven to successfully produce titanium and its alloys besides other reactive metals. This paper presents experimental results on the production of titanium and its alloys including shape memory alloys such TiNi as well as results on the production of highly porous titanium by the FFC-Cambridge or direct electro-deoxidation process.
