Abstract

A rapid and simple preconcentration method by selective adsorption on activated carbon and slurry sampling electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) was developed for the determination of trace level of copper in seawater. Adsorption efficiency was enhanced by complexation of copper with 8-hydroxyquinoline(oxine). Adsorption conditions of copper oxinate complex on activated carbon such as pH, concentration of oxine, contact time and amount of activated carbon were investigated in order to optimize the preconcentration procedure. Parameters affecting the ETAAS analysis by slurry-sampling technique were studied. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of copper in seawater. The detection limit was 11 ppt and recovery was 89%.
