Abstract: Rhombohedral PZT ceramics with the formulation of Pb(Zr0.56 Ti0.44)0.99-xMg0.01MnxO3 (with x = 0.0 to 0.02) were prepared by solid state reaction using the conventional mixed oxide route. Effects of MnO on the physical and electrical properties of ëhardí Mg-doped PZT ceramics were investigated. The addition of small amounts of Mn (< 0.5 mol%) resulted in a ësofteningí effect in Mg-doped PZT ceramics, yielding increased dielectric nonlinearity, whereas the higher amounts of Mn gave rise to a ëhardeningí effect. The structure and microstructure of ceramics were characterized using XRD and SEM. The dielectric permittivity and loss were obtained at high electric field strengths, in the range 0.1 to 2.0 kV mm-1 , in order to determine the nonlinear dielectric behaviour and ageing characteristics.
