Abstract:
A study of 260 adult Thai dry sterna from 174 male and 86 female skeletons was carried out to pin point parameters for sexing, using measurements. It was found out that only the length of the body of the sternum was of predictive value in determining sex, using two equations : Ym = -29.296 + 0.608 body and Yf = -22.927 + 0.526 body, where Ym stood for male and Yf for female. Depending on the value obtained after substituting for the length of the body, in both equations, the sex was allocated to the one with greater value. Thus 90.8% of male and 40.7% of female sterna could be accurately allocated with an accuracy rate of 74.2%. All other parameters including length of manubrium , manubrium and body and manubrium/body ratio demonstrated no value to differentiate sex. The mean length of the male body was 94.99 mm and that of female 82.55 mm. Multivariate analysis and student t-test were used for this study. The result were different from those reported previously possibly due to anthropological reasons.
