Abstract: The thesaurus technique to representing and exploiting domain knowledge have been long used by intelligent database design tools when performing the task of design synthesis. However, the capacity of such a representation of knowledge to enhance the diagnostic performance of the intelligent database design tools has yet to be explored and evaluated. This paper presents such and evaluation, focusing upon three aspects: processing efficiency. system's appearance of intelligence and quality of design output. Findings suggest that the us of this technique has the potential to increase the tool's performance in detecting inconsistencies that would remain undiscovered in situations where system-held domain knowledge was not available and reducing the processing complexities associated in diagnosing such inconsistencies.
