Abstract
We demonstrate the characterization of long-wavelength (L-band) band Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers for optical communication systems. The operating bandwidth of the L-band amplifier is from 1570 to 1600 nm with gain flatness of less than 1 dB. This shows that the Lband amplifiers require simpler designs of gain flattening filter in order to extend the bandwidth. L-band amplifiers behave like the conventional-band (C-band) amplifiers except that they require longer lengths of Erbium-doped fiber. Gain as high as 42 dB and noise figure of less than 4.6 dB are obtained experimentally using a hybrid pumping design, 980 and 1480 nm pump lasers.
