Abstract
We present simple analytical expressions for reflectivity, transmission and enhancement factors due to coupling between an incident photon field and resonant surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) states in the case of a periodically structured metallic layer surrounded by two different dielectric materials. The case of a grating PtSi/Si infrared detector is considered, as an example, to show that SPPs excitation leads to a minimum in reflectance at either a particular angle or wavelength of incident light. Some basic aspects related to the use of SPPs for light waveguides in the presence of a gain medium to compensate for the lossy nature of SPPs are briefly discussed.
