Abstract: An investigation of benthic macroinvertebrate and water quality of some main wetlands in Chiang Mai-Lamphun basin has been made from twelve sites of man-made reservoirs and natural ponds. The data collected were biodiversity of benthic macroinvertebrates, landuse and physical characteristics, and chemical quality of water bodies. The investigation results indicated the differences of benthic macroinvertebrate abundance between study sites, which totally could be classified into 3 phylums, 5 classes, 9 orders and 25 families. These differences thus were markables due to altered landuse, geographic setting, and water quality of each wetland. Water-quality analysis results characterized all study sites from mesotrophic to eutrophic. Every wetland under study so far were more or less polluted by some kinds of human activities, especially site no. 4 (Nong Mae Yuak) which was the most polluted site and classified as eutrophic. Such pollution occurred to this site may affect on macroinvertebrate diversity. Therefore, towards the need of environmental conservation and management for sustainable utilization of the wetlands, some preventive and remedial measures should be implemented.
