Abstract
Silicon carbide nanofibers were successfully fabricated using a laboratory constructed current heating apparatus in argon atmosphere. The nanofibers were synthesized from uniaxially pressed rods with different weight percentages of graphite, aluminium oxide, iron oxide and rice husk charcoal mixture. It was found that the nanofibers obtained from a mixture of 50 wt% charcoal, 44 wt% graphite and 2 wt% Al2O3-Fe2O3 let to the smallest fibers of an approximate diameter 46 nm. Microstructure of the fibers was observed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Phase composition was characterized using Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) techniques.
