Abstract

An isolate of a red bacterium, Serratia sp. RB1 producing a high water-insoluble red pigment was studied. Growth and pigment production were examined under three different media; Nutrient Broth(NB), Peptone Glycerol Broth (PGB) and Modified Media (MM). The maximum pigment content was 9.73 g/l from the cells cultured in MM with cellular accumulation of 7.10 g/l whereas the pigment content and cellular accumulation in NB medium were 5.0 and 1.63 g/l, respectively. Poor growth and pigment was produced in PGB medium. To increase the pigment production Serratia sp. RB1 immobilized on polyester sponge was compared with free cells cultured in NB and MM. Pigment productions obtained from the immobilized cells were higher than those of the free cells in both media while the cells biomass were not much different. The maximum pigment production by immobilized cells and free cells in MM were 26.84 and 9.73 g/l, respectively. The immobilized cells of Serratia sp. RB1 on polyester sponge gave high yield of pigment when cultured in the MM. In addition, the immobilized cells were suitable for cell growth and for improvement of cell viability.
