Abstract:

Adsorption is a promising and extensively utilized approach for removing organic molecules from aqueous solutions. The present study explores, the potential of barite (BaSO4) as adsorbent for mannose removal from aqueous solutions at 25°C. Spectrophotometric method was used to investigate the interaction of mannose solution with barite crystals at 25°C in two different solutions, in neutral (mannose only) and in an aqueous positively charged (mannose + BaCl2) solutions, (in both solutions the initial mannose concentration varied from 0.16 to 1.0×10−3 mole/l). The adsorption experiments reveal the variation of the mannose equilibrium concentrations (C) with the amount of mannose adsorbed (x). The experimental data were analyzed by the various isotherm models to explain the adsorption mechanism. The data were found to follow Freundlich-isotherm model showing that the interaction of mannose solution with barite crystals was physical adsorption. It was found that barite as adsorbent demonstrated good removal capabilities and hence can considered as a promising adsorbent for removing organic pollutants.
