Abstract: Six new organotin(IV) dithiocarbamate complexes were successfully synthesised by reactions between 1-methylpiperazinedithiocarbamate, C5H11N2CS2 (1-mepzdtc) (1a-1c) and N-methylcyclohexyldithiocarbamate, C7H14NCS2 (c-hexmetdtc) (1x-1z) with organotin(IV) chloride, RxSnCIx (R = Bu, Me, Ph) and (x = 1, 2 or 3) (2a-2c) and (2x-2z). The complexes were then characterised by typical spectroscopic and analytical techniques, namely CHNS elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-vis and 1H and 13C NMR. From infrared spectra (FT-IR), the formation of organotin(IV) dithiocarbamate complexes were confirmed by the presence of v(C=N+) at 1460 - 1485 cm-1, v(C-S) at 963 - 1025 cm-1, v(Sn-C) at 515 - 571 cm-1and v(Sn-S) at 400 - 450 cm-1. In addition, 1H NMR spectra of the complexes show all expected resonances of the synthesised complexes while 13C NMR spectra exhibit expected resonance of δC (C=S) which indicate that dithiocarbamate is acting as the focalpoint ligand in the complexation. In turn, all complexes were also tested for anti-microbial activity towards the selected bacteria namely, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi and Escherichia coli. From the microbial test, all synthesised complexes were found to exhibit great potential results as anti-microbial agents, except for complex 2x which does not show any inhibition activity towards these bacteria. |
