Abstract: A piezoelectric cylinder motor was designed, fabricated and characterized in this paper. Different from other types of the ultrasonic motors, the ìradius-reduction mechanismî was proposed and applied in the studied motor. A prototype has been fabricated based on this mechanism. The prototype consists of piezoelectric transducer, radius-reduction component and rotational shaft. The working principle of the motor has been explained based on the finite element analysis on the rotational motion of the piezoelectric tube stator. The performance of the prototype has been tested using the torque detector and converter. The motor can produce a stall torque about 600 µNm and no-load speed around 3190 rpm at 50 Vp-p
