Abstract
A very simple, mild and highly efficient green catalyst has been developed for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazoles by treatment of substituted ortho-phenylenediamines and aldehydes at room temperature in the presence of cobalt (II) acetylacetone (Co(acac)2). The products were directly recrystallized from hot methanol in good yields.
