Abstract: The paper will review the basic structural characteristics of both multiwall nanotubes (MWNTs) and single-wall nanotubes (SWNTs). Various processing methods and techniques to control the tube size and shape will be described. Intriguing electronic and mechanical properties of these nanotubes, as smart materials will be illustrated. SWNTs can display its semiconducting or metallic character depending on its diameter and helicity. Fundamental principles of relationship between structure and properties of nanotubes will be discussed. Several applications based on the electronic and mechanical properties of the nanotubes will be provided as examples. These include the explorations of nanotubes as field emitters, as molecular electronic interconnects, as scanning tunneling microscope tips, and in Li ion batteries.
