Abstract: An optical chemical sensor for Cu(II) ion, based on reflectance measurement of lipophilized nitroso-r (NRS) reagent immobilized in sol-gel matrix has been developed. The reaction between immobilized reagent with Cu(II) occurred at pH 3.0 and gave a linear response to the Cu(II) concentration in the range of 7.87 x 10-5 – 1.57 x 10-3 M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.22 x 10-5 M. The sensor showed a good reproducibility with RSD value of 6.3% for 3.15 x 10-4 M Cu(II) and 5.9% for 1.57 x 10-3 M while the response time was fixed at 10 min by using kinetic approach. The sensor could be regenerated with 0.2 M HCl solution. The results obtained for Cu(II) determination in tap water sample were in good agreement with those obtained using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).
