Abstract: This Special Issue of the Chiang Mai Journal of Science comprises 11 of the Invited Papers that were presented at the Inaugural CMU-UNSW Science Challenges Symposium 2009 Sustainability Through Science held at Chiang Mai University from 12-13 March 2009. The main purpose of this Inaugural Symposium was to bring together distinguished scientists from Chiang Mai University (CMU), Thailand, and the The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, for 2 days of research presentations and discussions leading to future research collaborations. At the same time, the Symposium was also a joint celebration of the 45th anniversary of CMU and the 60th anniversary of UNSW. Approximately 70 staff and postgraduate research students attended the Symposium in which a total of 22 oral presentations were given. In addition, there were 2 poster sessions, one on each day, in which most of the presenters were CMU postgraduate students. The presentations covered the following 9 areas:
1) Risk Management Aspects of Climate Change and Natural Disasters 2) Water Management – Water Quality, Wetlands and Agriculture 3) Biotechnology – Bio-analysis, Bio-prospecting, Environmental Microbiology 4) Air Pollution 5) Nanotechnology 6) Biodiversity and Sustainability 7) Astronomy and Cosmology 8) Advanced Materials and Nanoelectronics 9) Mathematics The 11 Invited Papers (6 from CMU and 5 from UNSW) in this Special Issue are arranged in alphabetical order according to the surname of the first-named author (CMU papers first). Last but not least, the Editorial Board of the Chiang Mai Journal of Science would like to thank the organisers of the Symposium for kindly submitting this collection of papers for publication. Covering a wide range of science-related topics, they constitute an original and authoritative set of contributions to their respective fields. |
