Abstract:
Species of Phellinus have been used as part of traditional medicine for a long time. Very little work has been done regarding identification of antibacterial compounds from Phellinus spp. In this work P. merrilli was grown in the laboratory. Optimal media composition for growth was obtained (malt extract (10 g/l), peptone (5 g/l), dextrose (10 g/l), yeast extract (3 g/l) and agar (15 g/l)) and antibacterial properties of the culture filtrate were identified. The culture filtrate had antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (inhibition zone 30 mm equal to 640 µg/ml of cloxacillin) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (inhibition zone 10 mm equal to 500 µg/ml of gentamicin). This work has identified laboratory culture conditions for P. merrilli and determined that its culture filtrate had antibacterial properties against S. aureus and Ps. aeruginosa.
